Today’s afternoon tea session took place at Annvita Tea Room, hidden in the basement floor of the Lippo Plaza on the busy streets of Huahai Zhong Lu. I chose this as our destination mainly because it’s located in a convenient place within the city, but the tearoom itself is quaint and classy.
The menu is meticulously written, showcasing their wide selection of teas, milk teas and refreshments as well as providing descriptions and extra information on the history of tea and all the necessary tea instruments required at the table. Among their famous fruit teas are the Earl Grey, English Rose and Annvita Original (65rmb for hot, 68rmb for cold). Milk teas include Dark Chocolate, Summer Pudding and Creamy Berry (65rmb for hot, 68rmb for cold). They also serve “extra healthy” teas such as Anti-Aging Range, Body Detox Range and Healthy-Skin Range (58rmb for hot, 65rmb for cold). And of course, they provide the classics such as Darjeeling, Ceylon and Assam tea (all 58rmb).
Tea set prices vary depending on how many people are sharing. The Victorian Afternoon Tea Set (118rmb for one, 228rmb for two) includes Victorian sandwiches, scones, savory treats, thematic cakes, fruit tarts, handmade cookies and tapas. The Jane Austen Tea Set (98rmb) is served for one with homemade cake, scone and sandwiches. Apart from the combos, you can order refreshments separately including original scones (38rmb), traditional waffles (50rmb), fruit sandwiches (45rmb), Scottish butter shortbread (30rmb), Annvita tea cookies (30rmb), Annvita homemade cake (38rmb) and cheesecake (38rmb).
I opted for a pot of cold Earl Grey fruit tea recommended by the waitress (68rmb).
With its delightfully tangy flavor and sweet accompanying aroma, I definitely recommend this option for first timers, especially for summer occasions. For those of you who want to tone down on the sweetness, the waitress will be happy to bring you a cup of ice to dilute your tea.
My grandma and aunt ordered two iced Sticky Toffee milk teas (68rmb).
The flavor is a bit overwhelming so they said they will be ordering what I had next time.
I ordered the Victorian Afternoon Tea set with my friend last time I came and was pretty disappointed because only a few of the treats stood out with the rest being very average and bland. This time we decided we would separately order our refreshments.
We ordered a plate of Annvita scones that came in twos (40rmb).
Annvita scones cost only 2rmb more than original scones and come with added cranberries. Their scones are soft and moist (almost biscuit-like) and I would definitely recommend them as they are better than the sandwiches.
We also ordered the handmade Annvita tea cookies (30rmb).
The waitress recommended the rose cookies but they came with our drinks so we decided against it. Good thing we ordered the Annvita tea cookies because they were downright delicious, made with bits of caramel and pistachio.
Overall, the highlight of this tearoom was really the entire experience. The atmosphere is quiet, service is professional, tea is high quality and refreshments are pretty adequate. The entire affair is relatively affordable compared to hotel afternoon teas (and the accompanying service charge). Both my grandma and aunt had a wonderful time so I will definitely be bringing them here in the future.
