What makes saying goodbye just a little easier? Well, doing it over brunch at Jean-Georges’ next to the Bund view doesn’t hurt. Having heard so many positive reviews on this restaurant, I thought it was an appropriate last lunch for my friend who was about to fly out the next morning.

Jean-Georges Vongerichten has long made his impression on the fine-dining junkies of Shanghai. Having worked under Paul Bocuse and Louis Outhier as well as trained in many Asian Pacific five star hotel restaurants, Jean-Georges has developed a unique way of making his dishes that purposely incorporate intensive Eastern influenced flavors. Current Shanghai restaurants under his name include Jean-Georges, Mercato and CHI-Q.   

Having arrived at around 12:30, all the window seats were already snagged so we settled for a quiet corner table. There were two kinds of brunch menus both priced at 258rmb+10% service fee; one was the regular weekly menu, which allowed you to choose two brunch items among the many offered with coffee, tea or juice and the other was the special weekend brunch menu which was already preset with an array of brunch items to taste test including eggs Benedict, smoked salmon on pomme maxim, buttermilk pancakes, French toast, croissant and pain au chocolat all of which came with coffee, tea or juice.

They first started us off with some complimentary bread. 

I’m never a big fan of prefixed menus so I opted for the normal brunch menu. My first dish was House Made Granola Yogurt and Fruit. 

Not a fan of the yogurt that was served at room temperature. The fruits were a bit sour so I avoided finishing them. However, the simple granola mixture of slightly toasted oats, crunchy sunflower seeds and dried cranberries definitely made up for the other two drawbacks.

It won’t come as a surprise that my second dish was Eggs Benedict with salmon. 

I was a bit disappointed that the Hollandaise was served on top of my eggs even though I had asked for the sauce on the side. Despite that, I was extremely satisfied with the dish itself. English muffin was fat, fluffy and warmly toasted, salmon portion was much larger than what I’ve received in other restaurants and eggs were poached to just the right degree for the yolk to perfectly ooze out with a slight touch of the fork. This dish also came with a side of salad and potato crisps.

My friend decided to forgo brunch and opted for the lunch set, which offered the choice of two dishes from the menu and a dessert (268rmb+10% service). HIs first dish was Sea Scallops with Caramelized Cauliflower. Scallops were fresh and juicy. 

His second dish was Slow Baked Salmon with Potato Puree and Black Truffle Vinaigrette. 

We finished our meals off with Jean-Georges Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. 

 

I’m not the biggest fan of chocolate cake, but this molten lava dessert was well done, with a warm chocolate filling inside and a small side of creamy vanilla ice cream.

 Overall, the highlight of this brunch was the ambiance of the old Shanghai 1920’s décor, the wide selection of brunch items available, the extremely hospitable restaurant service and the quality of the food. I will most definitely be bringing my family back here to try out the dinner menu.
