One of our most anticipated meals in Tokyo? You guessed it – unagi don (eel over rice) was on our minds. Called to make reservations at one of the oldest/most famous unagi don restaurants, Chikuyotei, just to find out that they don’t reserve seats. They’re popular to the point that people are lining up outside at 11:20AM before they even open at 11:30AM. Luckily we arrived early and were seated within a few minutes.

Went right ahead and ordered their famous Eel Lacquered Box.

Generous portions of soft eel slices broiled before gently dipped in sweet sauce and grilled until flavoring has settled in. Biggest difference between this unagi don and others that I’ve had in China, Taiwan and the US has got to the be the sauce, which is purposely made mild so that you can fully taste the quality of their eel. Extremelyyyy pleased.

We also ordered the Eel Bowl.

Served in a round bowl instead of a box, this set of eel over rice tastes very similar to the one above. Although slightly cheaper, I would still recommend getting the Eel Lacquered Box because it comes with more eel (might has well have more since you're here!).

Simple, but quality stuff. Prices are actually quite reasonable for their famous "classic dish" and eel is definitely their specialty so make that the priority order when you eat here.

Ganso Zushi

Continuing with our cheap eats theme, we stumbled upon Ganso Zushi on our way out from sticky pics and decided to grab a quick bite. Here you’ll find all the staple nigiri choices served on small plates rotating on a belt around the sushi chef. Grab a stool and brace yourself.

We tried their Eel Nigiri.

Ughhh mood: craving right now. Tender and delicate with a brush of sweet sauce.

We also had their Salmon Nigiri.

Now this is the salmon I traveled three hours to Tokyo for – fresh and melts right in your mouth.

Didn’t have time to try out the other dishes, but this chain joint has definitely got a big A+ in my books. Do drop by for their quick and fresh nigiri served at extremely reasonable prices.

Sanuki Udon Hanamaru

Believe it or not, cheap franchised eats can sometimes be the best eats. We hit up Hanamaru for their famed udon, though it should be noted that they also serve tempura, onigiri rice balls and plates of side veggies.

We had their recommended Mentai Kamatama. Note that you can opt for small (400yen), medium (500yen) or large (600yen) in size.

bowl of thick, chewy udon noodles lathered with gooey raw egg and spicy (but very mild) cod roe. What’s even better – they provide free toppings and sauces at their side counter including spring onions, ginger, hot peppers, soy sauce and tempura crumbs.

Really a bang for your buck kinda place. Simple and satisfying if you’re looking for a quick udon fix.

Standing Sushi Bar (Shibuya)

Phone Number: 5428 4851

English Address: 2-9-1 Dongenzaka Shibuya-ku

*Note: Cash only

When in doubt, order sushi…lots and lots of sushi, then loosen your belt and order some more. Found ourselves in this little joint in the heart of Shibuya with customers frequently scurrying in and out. The name says it all – simple, no BS place where you stand, they make, you eat, they smile, you pay, they bow and you leave a happy camper.

We started off with their Yaki-Salmon Mayo.

Scorched with fire in front of you, the mayo melts across the lightly seared salmon. Definitely recommend.

Of course, we ordered their Salmon as well.

hick texture and chewier than any salmon I’ve ever had. Personally not the way I like my salmon, but may appeal to others.

Lastly we had their Avocado with mayo.

resh, creamy avocado that melts in the mouth. Highly recommended if avocados are in season.

Overall, quite an authentic place suited for those looking to catch a quick bite before heading back to the office (or in our case, heading off to our next foodie destination). Do drop by for a try even if it's just a few orders because the prices are extremely reasonable and the quality does not disappoint.
